The Bunny Man

The Bunny Man is a mysterious humanoid figure tied to one of Fairfax, Virginia’s most chilling urban legends.

Description

The Bunny Man is a mysterious humanoid figure tied to one of Fairfax, Virginia’s most chilling urban legends. Described in the original 1970 reports as a man wearing a white suit with rabbit ears or bunny-like costume elements, the figure was first encountered by Robert Bennett and his fiancée while parked near a cornfield off Guinea Road. The figure allegedly approached their vehicle in an aggressive state, shouted that they were trespassing, and hurled a hatchet through the passenger-side window before disappearing into the darkness. A later report described a similarly dressed figure violently chopping at the porch supports of a nearby unfinished home with an axe, fueling fear throughout the area. Over time, the legend evolved far beyond the documented police reports, transforming the figure into a folkloric menace associated with Bunny Man Bridge, despite the original Bennett encounter taking place elsewhere. The Bunny Man has since become a symbol of paranoia, trespassing fears, and the blurring line between documented crime and supernatural folklore.

Episode Appearance

The Bunny Man was discussed in Episode 9, titled The Bunny Man, featuring historian and researcher Wes. During the episode, Wes breaks down the original Bennett case, shares insights from his interviews with the victims, and explores how the real story became distorted into the infamous Bunny Man Bridge legend.

Folklore and Background

The Bunny Man legend is one of Northern Virginia’s most enduring local myths. Although the bridge in Clifton became the focal point of the story, historical records suggest the bridge itself was not part of the original incident. Later retellings added false claims of murders, ghostly apparitions, and an escaped asylum patient.

Theories and Analysis

Some theories suggest the Bunny Man was simply an enraged local resident attempting to scare trespassers away as suburban neighborhoods expanded into once-rural land. Others believe the incidents may have involved a mentally disturbed individual whose actions became exaggerated over time. The uncertainty surrounding motive, identity, and location continues to make the Bunny Man one of the most debated urban legends in America.

Since the original 1970 reports, countless alleged Bunny Man sightings have been connected to the bridge, nearby woods, and surrounding Fairfax County roads, though none are directly tied to the Bennett case.
