The Sinister District — Original Lore

The original fictional narrative and world-building developed before the show became a real-world paranormal interview podcast.

The Lore of The Sinister District refers to the original fictional narrative and world-building concepts developed during the early planning stages of the project, before it transitioned into a real-world paranormal interview podcast.

The Original Fictional Concept

The Sinister District was originally planned as a scripted horror audio drama rather than an interview-based show. The early concept was designed to blur the line between fiction and broadcast, presenting the events as if they were happening live.

In this version, the hosts, Michael Paul and Mr. Curbs, would appear as fictionalized versions of themselves, slowly becoming entangled in disturbing events occurring throughout the city around them.

The Sinister District (Fictional City)

The fictional setting known as The Sinister District was portrayed as an isolated city surrounded by water and cut off from the outside world. The city served as the central location for the original narrative. This concept was thought of by Michael Paul and Mr. Curbs all the way back in 2023 during high school lunch. Original name ideas for the city was ‘Sin City’ by Michael, but Curbs reminded him that’s already a name of a song. They later settled on the name Sinister District.

Notable characteristics of the fictional city included:

  • A dense, looming skyline
  • A Dark black sea surrounding the district
  • Limited entry and exit points
  • Increasing paranormal activity over time
  • Unexplained events occurring during live recordings

As episodes progressed, strange occurrences would subtly escalate throughout the city while the hosts continued their broadcasts.

Planned Narrative Elements

The original lore planned for The Sinister District included:

  • Serialized horror story arcs spanning multiple episodes
  • Voice actors portraying city residents and recurring characters
  • Fictional paranormal events happening in real time
  • A cinematic, audio-drama style presentation

These elements were intended to immerse listeners and make the city feel like an active, collapsing environment rather than a static setting.

The early logo depicted a silhouetted city skyline and a boat approaching the district. Within the context of the lore, this imagery symbolized:

  • Entry into the unknown
  • Isolation from the outside world
  • A point of no return
  • The city as a dangerous and living entity

The boat represented outsiders, including the audience, crossing into the district and witnessing its unraveling.

Transition Away From Fiction

During development, the creators decided to abandon the fictional narrative in favor of focusing on real-world paranormal encounters. This decision marked a major shift in the direction of The Sinister District.

Scripted events, fictional characters, and the evolving city storyline were set aside in favor of real interviews, firsthand accounts, and non-fiction discussion. Another reason for this switch was a lack of voice actors and episode reliability, as well as originality. Some other podcasts were thought to be too similar, so Michael Paul eventually went with the real life interview style show, nodding a huge inspiration from Coast to Coast AM, the new logo would eventually be inspired from it and there radio-styled podcasts.

Legacy of the Lore

Although the show no longer follows a fictional storyline, the original lore remains an important part of its identity. The current logo retains the city in the background while incorporating UFOs and cryptid imagery such as Bigfoot, representing the paranormal topics discussed on the show today.

This visual continuity reflects the evolution from fictional horror storytelling to real-world encounters while honoring the project’s origins.

Trivia

  • The original concept was intended to unfold in real time during episodes.
  • The hosts were meant to be unaware participants in the fictional events.
  • The fictional city in-universe was named The Sinister District.
  • Elements of the original lore still influence the show’s atmosphere and branding.
  • The catchphrase of the show was “What is this some kind of Sinister District?” But Curbs thought it sounded stupid. (You may hear Michael Paul slip one in still here and there)
